CEO’s Town hall

Barmer, Rajasthan

The Barmer team had a lively interaction with Sudhir Mathur, CEO; Sai Subramanian, President, Rajasthan Operations; and Sharad Goenka, Chief Strategy and Policy Officer for Cairn Oil & Gas, during an employee town hall on site. The leadership team took the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the team’s achievements, provide strategic updates for the new financial year, and share the Group vision, mission, strategy, and values with the employees. While addressing the young engineers, managers, and executives, Sudhir reiterated the goal of enhancing production from the RJ-ON block. Deliberating on projects and operational highlights, Sudhir stressed on the need of continuous focus on safety at the workplace. “We’ve performed well, and as we look ahead, we have a lot of exciting things on our plate to accomplish together,” he said. The following morning, the leadership team added rows of indigenous pomegranate saplings to the lush plantations on the MPT compound – reiterating the company’s focus on sustainability and the environment.


Towards Our Growth Vision

Cairn Oil & Gas is actively pursuing its vision to contribute 50% of India’s domestic oil production and with an eventual target of producing 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. As a step towards this vision, Cairn has already started executing ‘integrated growth projects’ which are end-to-end partnerships. Recently, Cairn received the prestigious award in global best practices in procurement for the ‘Best Cross-Functional Team Work’ category from Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), United Kingdom in an award function held in Singapore on July 11, 2018. Our submission was made on ‘Vision 2020 - Leveraging end-to-end partnerships’ referenced to our conceptualized award of 10 exploration and development projects in the Cairn portfolio to be executed in the next 2-3 years. This prestigious award was received by a senior delegation from Cairn, led by Suniti Bhat (COO – Cairn Oil & Gas).


Technological Feat

Barmer, Rajasthan

Cairn Oil & Gas has added another feather in its cap through successful drilling of the longest horizontal drain-hole (1294 meters) in India with a total well length of 2630 meters. This admirable feat was accomplished in the first well of 39 wells Aishwarya Barmer Hill development drilling campaign, which commences the new growth journey for tight oil development. This was a combined effort of meticulous planning and efficient execution; an outcome of extraordinary leadership acumen & “can-do” spirit of the integrated team involved in the operation that includes Schlumberger, our technology partners in this project.

CII Award

RGT, Rajasthan

Cairn Oil & Gas won the 5th CII Environmental Best Practices Award 2018 for ‘natural gas recovery - zero flaring during frac well milling operation’ project in the category – ‘most innovative environmental project’ with the broader title ‘climate change and mitigation’. The award was presented on June 27, 2018 in the Greenco Summit 2018, CII – Godrej GBCs flagship annual event at Chennai. The award winning project is the unique example of production and well services collaborative excellence to innovate the set up for debris free gas along with the procedural amendments in the recovery of natural gas flared during milling operation. The innovative solution provided safe and controlled operation for recovery of natural gas and condensate collected during milling operation to production system and set up a global bench mark for zero flaring during milling operation. On behalf of the company, Mr Samir Kulkarni – Installation Manager, RGT supported by team members Mr Chandrasekhar Bankar, Mr Pranay Shrivastava and Mr Anurag Kumar presented the case study which also included a Q&A session.

HSE Campaign

RGT, Rajasthan

HSE campaign deliberates change in belief and behavior to adopt HSE-focused working attitude. Mr Samir Kulkarni,  Installation Manager – RJ Gas, officially inaugurated the HSE campaign on topics ‘health, hygiene in monsoon’, ‘safe material handling’, ‘hot work safety’ & ‘water conservation’ on July 04, 2018 at Raageshwari Gas Terminal (RGT) . The objective of the HSE campaign is to raise the awareness among all employees working at RGT on HSE aspects. RGT team focused on workplace health and safety promotions by ensuring the combined efforts of operation team and contractor workers to improve the health and well-being of people at workplace. Employees and contractor staff enthusiastically shared their experience & HSE tips during the program. The campaign concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by site HSE team.


As part of the HSE recognition program, ‘Best HSE Performer – contractor’ employee of the month was awarded to Mr Virdha Ram from contractor security staff for the month of June 2018. Mr Samir Kulkarni, Installation Manager – RJ Gas, presented the certificate of appreciation during weekly HSE meet, for his efforts towards safety.


Welcoming Young Talent

BOLD – Barrels of Learning per Day is Cairn’s world class campus hire program aimed at nurturing talent and building technical and leadership capability in tomorrow’s leaders. It is a uniquely structured one year learning journey that aims at providing a holistic progression path for our young talent through development of technical, behavioral and cross-functional skills. Cairn Oil & Gas  welcomed the batch of 2018 comprising of 71 GETs (Graduate Engineering Trainees) from premier institutes of the country with a two week long induction program, comprising of leadership connect sessions, classroom training programs, team building sessions as well as outdoor activities. The program was inaugurated by Mr Sudhir Mathur, CEO - Cairn Oil & Gas along with senior leadership team.


In Rajasthan, the HR Team conducted an extensive three-day induction for the GETs, focusing on a thorough introduction to all aspects of the site. The program was designed and coordinated by site HR team, and covered all the technical departments including operations, projects, HSE and petroleum engineering, as well as key support functions including HR, finance, PSCM, IT and security.


PE Field Trip

Barmer, Rajasthan

Knowledge sharing is a very important tool in order to make conducive learning pattern as part of the working culture.  It is very evident that in a field of ours, where stakeholder management is part of our daily affair, acquaintance with the functioning of different departments is a key factor which almost turns indispensable in context the youngest of engineers, the GETs. A session was organised on July 18, 2018 by the Petroleum Engineering (PE) department, where GETs gathered for a classroom session on Petroleum Technology followed up by a field visit to various PE operational sites. They were given a brief insight of basic petroleum geology, reservoir engineering followed up drilling, completions and well services operations during the class room session. The field tour comprised of the site visits to e-line, slickline, coil tubing and surface well test units under well services function. The engineers showed great enthusiasm and curiosity to understand the operations in detail.


Discovering the Authors

Gurugram, NCR

‘Discovering the Authors’ session was organised on July 20, 2018 at Veda Library by the IT & Innovation team. The session was held on a book titled “Chautha Dhandha: Kisse journalism ke” by the author Mr Ayodhya Prasad Gaur, GM - Corporate Communications. He described the subject of the book and narrated a summary of the contents, which is a tale of true confessions, presented in a fictional way. He mentioned that the book is a reflection of the dark side of journalism which is often referred to as the fourth pillar of democracy, that has turned into a business—Chautha Khabha or merely Chautha Dhandha.  During the session, he also shared few interesting stories from his journalism days.


The winners of the contest were declared at the end of the session. They were handed over a signed copy of the book by the author. Also, a memento was presented to the author by Ms Madhavi Jha, Chief Communication Officer.


Awareness on WED 2018

World Environment Day (WED) 2018 is celebrated every year to raise global awareness towards protecting nature and the planet Earth. On this occasion, Veda – library at Cairn Oil & Gas, organised a ‘movie matinee show’ for its staff on June 5, 2018. Following the theme for this year to save environment from plastic, three movies named Beat Plastic Pollution, Plastic Bottle Island and Plastic Planet were screened in the library. The show concluded with a short discussion with viewers and final remarks by Mr K K Nayak, GM - Safety, HSEQ. A ‘lead to read’ initiative was also followed in which books related to environment were also displayed in the library.


Knowledge Sharing Session

‘Money is certainly not everything’ but it helps to give us freedom of choice. Veda - library at Cairn Oil & Gas organised a ‘knowledge sharing’ session on ‘personal finance and investing’ by Sanjay Chhibber, DGM - Incident Investigation Manager, HSEQ on June 21, 2018. The session was aimed to equip the audience with tools to invest and manage their personal finances. The speaker reckoned a number of mistakes which one can avoid every day, keeping long term investment horizon. More than 40 employees interacted enthusiastically during the session.


Unwind to Recharge Mind

Bhagyam, Rajasthan

Each day begins with the challenges: too many tasks in hand and not enough time to accomplish them. Perhaps most of us feel that we had some more hours in the day to work longer and finish it all. But, enough and more studies have proved that a relaxed mind boosts productivity. In line with this thought, Wellness Committee MPT & Bhagyam conducted  weekend fun activities for their staff on July 21-22, 2018.The lawns of Bhagyam were  lit bright and employees savored sumptuous dinner and enjoyed some fun filled games and team bonding activities.


Good Housekeeping

RGT, Rajasthan

Raageshwari Gas Terminal (RGT) has completed 5S pre- certification audit by M/s QCFI on July 19, 2018. RGT successfully prequalified for 5S certification audit and the next audit is planned in September 2018. Mr Sanjay Chibber, DGM HSEQ and the QCFI consultant team members highly appreciated site housekeeping standards and the progress made on 5S initiatives within a short span of time. In particular, some of the ‘Best out of Waste’ initiatives were highly appreciated by the audit team. Special thanks to Mr DVR Murhty and all champions for innovative actions.


Enhancing Knowledge

Blue Waters is a newsletter published bi-annually by Indian Coast Guard. An authored article by P.A. Joseph from our CB/OS-2 site team, on the topic ‘Importance of oil spill contingency plan’ was published in the February 2018 edition of the newsletter. The article delves into the details on a) What is an oil spill?  b) Effects of marine oil spill c) General information on oil spill d) Crude oil specification.

Leadership Engagement

Barmer, Rajasthan

To strengthen our community outreach and stakeholder engagement, Cairn Oil & Gas ExCo represented by Sudhir Mathur-CEO, Sai Subramanian-President-Rajasthan Operation, Srikrishna S-Chief HSEQ Officer, Sharad Goenka-Chief Strategy & Policy Officer and Madhavi Jha-Chief Communication Officer visited various areas in Barmer running our CSR programs. The engagement was kicked off with tree plantation at MPT, followed by visit to Nand Ghar; Natural Resource Management sites like wadis, baap nadi, dairy project; community RO plant, the district hospital and the Cairn Enterprise Centre. The leaders took the opportunity to interact with all the community members and stakeholders. Our support to District Hospital in Barmer was appreciated by the Govt. of Rajasthan and a certificate of recognition was presented to Mr Mathur during this visit. He also laid a foundation stone for a RO plant at the hospital. A stakeholder engagement forum was organized to recognize and felicitate our partners and community members.


Safety Awareness

Radhanpur, Gujarat

Cairn believes that stakeholders residing at our operational assets are an integral part of our routine safety and development initiative. As part of CSR volunteer initiatives for the community, a ‘disaster preparedness & safety awareness session’ was organised at Vallabhnagar Government Primary School, Radhanpur to raise awareness on disaster preparedness, along with fire and road safety among students, parents and school officials. This initiative is in partnership with district disaster management cell, Patan. Mr Mansoor Shah Khan from HSE team addressed the audience on the types of disasters, preparedness, fire and road safety. It was followed by a demonstration of fire extinguishers and basic firefighting by the Cairn team.


Project Divyang


Cairn is committed to develop and promote sports in the country and support the sports persons in their path to achieving excellence. Cairn has been supporting three promising para athletes from Rajasthan since February 2017 through Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). Since his association with Cairn, Mr Sandeep Singh Maan has won eight Gold Medals in various reputed international events and Ms Shatabdi Awasthi bounced back from her long bed-ridden ailment to win yet another podium finish at World Grand Prix, Berlin in June 2018. Mr Sundar Singh Gurjar has been most promising of all three, having won eleven gold medals in international events including the sole gold medal for India in World Para-Athletics Championship, London in 2017. Recently, while participating in first Indian Open Para Athletics Championship held in Bengaluru in July 2018, Sundar went on to break the world record in Javelin with a throw (64.11 m), beating the previous record of 63.97 m set by gold medalist Devendra Jhajharia in Rio Paralympics, 2016. All three have been selected to represent India at Asian Para Games, Jakarta in October 2018.

Access to Water

Barmer, Rajasthan

Nawatala Rathoran village is around 95km away from district headquarter, Barmer located in one of the most difficult terrains, with sand dunes and faces extreme scarcity of water. The community had to rely on one open well going to a depth of 200 meters. The common practice was to nominate one member each from family on a rotational basis to draw out water for the community with 200 households. Cairn Oil & Gas, in partnership with Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Barmer took up this cause to provide an alternative to cumbersome practice and commissioned a ‘bore well’ along with a ground level reservoir, which serves as the lifeline for the community. It provides a steady flow of water for drinking and for livestock. This bore well reduces drudgery, saves time and ultimately provides adequate water for the residents.


World Population Day

Suvali, Gujarat

World Population Day, which seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, was established by then Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. Cairn Oil & Gas and Dhara Sansthan celebrated the day at Suvali Village on July 11, 2018 to raise awareness on various population issues such as the importance of family planning, including gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights. More than 40 people attended the event and activities included - seminar discussions, health and educational sessions and concluded with  Q &A session.

Workshop for Farmers

Barmer, Rajasthan

Barmer district has around 14 lakh ha cultivable land, of which Bajra (pearl millet) is grown on 9 lakh hectares (highest area for single crop), but productivity is still the lowest in the country. To enhance the productivity of Bajara, a technical workshop was organised at Cairn Enterprise Center, Barmer on June 27, 2018.  The workshop was inaugurated by Dr M S Shekhawat, Zonal Director and Professor Rathore from Bikaner Agriculture University and attended by more than 70 farmers from Bhadkha, Kaukeda, Chitar ka par along with Ranigaon panchayat. During the workshop, the farmers were given sample of technically modified Hoe (Kassi) from Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI) Jodhpur and Hindi version of a technical booklet on pearl millet.


Skilling India

Barmer, Rajasthan

Cairn aims to build capacity among local youth through skill training and link them with employment – whether it is through a job or an enterprise. Recently, one of the students of CEC, Sharwan Kumar bagged a job with Government of Rajasthan as Tele-responder to the Chief Minister’s helpline, despite suffering from locomotor disability. He was enrolled in Basic Computer Operator course at CEC and now leads a life of dignity and independence.

Sustainable Development

Barmer, Rajasthan

Cairn is committed to empower the local communities in our areas of operation and support in their sustainable and inclusive growth. This commitment is fundamental to our long-term success and we are focused on creating shared value, not only for the communities we operate in, but for all our partners. Cairn partnered with a Gujarat based NGO, YUVA Unstoppable to initiate a pilot project in two schools. This project is now scaled up to 27 schools, catering to more than 7000 children in Barmer district and aims to provide shade to the children where the temperatures go beyond 50 degrees in the summers, create hygienic toilets for girls and boys, providing drinking water space as well as conduct regular trainings sessions, focusing on bringing out behavioural change in students towards health and sanitation issues.



ACT UP Workshop

Vedanta always strives to enhance the employee capability through various capacity building workshops. In similar lines, Avanstrate Leadership Workshop – ACT UP was conducted on June 26-27, 2018 at Tainan, Taiwan. The objective of the workshop was to engage with the bright minds of ASI from three different countries and provide them an opportunity to share their passion, implementable ideas & suggestions for business growth & excellence, besides a platform to identify leaders for significantly higher and elevated leadership roles to steer AvanStrate towards next phase of growth.

Towards Tandarust Punjab

Punjab Chief Minster Captain Amarinder Singh on World Environment Day – June 5, launched mission `Tandarust Punjab’ focusing on making Punjab more green and ensuring a good living environment. Towards this, TSPL organised a grand inaugural ceremony on July 25, 2018 wherein Shri K. S. Pannu, IAS, Secretary Agriculture and Director Mission Tandarust Punjab was invited as the chief guest. Other Guest of honors participated were Mr. Pawan Garg, Member Secretary and Mr. Karunesh Garg, Chief Environment Engineer besides other top officials from Punjab Pollution Control Board and district administration. The chief guest along with other visiting dignitaries did plantation of around 100 saplings at identified spots at Talwandi town followed by inauguration function. Shri Pannu appreciated TSPL’s endeavor of taking the mission dedicatedly and praised company’s effort of recording itself in Guinness World Record and maintain a green vegetative cover around plant.

Employee Engagement through Sports

Vedanta Sesa Goa Iron Ore organised an inter cluster football tournament on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at SFA, Sanquelim. A total of 4 teams across IOG & VAB participated with full enthusiasm and spirit. VAB Security team emerged as winners of the tournament and Security team South were the runners- up. Such engagements are enabling greater employee engagement and also help supporting Vedanta’s commitment towards promoting football in the nation.

Strengthening Community Health

Our commitment to strengthen primary health services in and around our areas of operation saw yet another milestone with the inauguration of a Primary Health Centre (PHC) at S’Yanam on July 30, 2018. The PHC was inaugurated by Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh Sri N Chinnarajappa in presence of village sarpanch, members of zilla parishad, mandal parishad, local villagers, hospital staff and management committee members. During the speech, Deputy Chief Minister appreciated the CSR activities and developmental activities carried out by the Cairn in the region. He recalled the time when this village didn’t have a connecting road between Amalapuram to S’Yanam and only after Cairn started operating in S’Yanam, major development took place and several people got employment opportunity in the plant.
