Petrotech 2019

Cairn Oil & Gas participated as the diamond sponsor in the 13th International Petrotech 2019 Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition from  February 10-12, 2019. Mr Sudhir Mathur participated at the CEO’s conclave titled “Shaping the new energy world” and our technical colleagues presented multiple oral and poster presentations. The stall  showcased our journey in India all the way to where we stand today with our growth projects and our newly awarded 41 blocks. It showed how our business achievements are underscored by our commitment to driving the triple bottom line for a sustainable future – #FortheFuture of our people, planet, and prosperity. The Cairn Oil & Gas exhibit also won the “Best Technology Presented” award among the many companies showcased at Petrotech 2019.


We had three busy days at the stall taking visitors through technical detail, our growth, our OALP new ventures opportunities, and our transformational community initiatives. Visitors were also thrilled by the live performances by musical maestros from Barmer, and the interactive quizzes and games run by our emcee. Our exhibit saw journalists from The Times of India, PTI, Business Standard, ET Now, BTVi, Times Now, BloombergQuint, Upstream, and Cogencis visit and engage with company spokesperson. It also gave us the opportunity to align Cairn’s narrative with the government’s vision to develop the oil and gas industry.


Energy & Safety Award

CB/OS-2 block at Suvali, Gujarat has been awarded the “Energy & Environment Foundation Global Safety Awards 2019" in Platinum category at the 9th World Petrocoal Congress held at New Delhi on February 16, 2019. The recognition was given for the best practices carried at our site location in terms of safety, energy & environment. The award was presented by Mr. Avinash Chandra, First Director General,DGH and Mr Razdan , Former Principal Secretary, Government of India. On behalf of the company, the award was received by Mr Thomas Christopher J - SBU Operations Head, Mr Pradip Kumar ,Assistant Manager-Finance & Mr Kalpesh Vaghasia – Manager Mechanical, CB/OS-2.


Techathon 2.0


Gurgaon, NCR

Techathon 2.0, a learning initiative was organized by Cairn IT & Technology team in February 2019. The  overall theme included three learning tracks: 1.Digital – focused towards digital operations, digital subsurface & project NIRMAAN. Project NIRMAAN aims to leverage digital technology to achieve Cairn’s business objectives and  targets to embed digital in everyday work through change management  2. Cyber Security – focused on understanding the perspectives of cyber security not only in oil and gas business but also in personal space 3.TechApps - sessions related to emerging technologies- robotic process automation, office productivity tools like MS Excel and Power BI & SAP HANA and module training .The event included 30+ sessions across different locations. Apart from the sessions a book donation drive, system performance clinic and e-waste collection kiosks were set-up at Gurgaon office. The sessions were followed by a quiz and an ideation drive.


Safety Awareness Session


RGT, Barmer

In oil and gas industry, safety leadership is a cornerstone to impart knowledge and inculcate an approach to “judgment of risk” is paramount. In Raageshwari Gas Terminal (RGT), Mr Santosh Srivastava – Chief Health Safety Officer conducted a session on Making Better Risk Decisions (MBRD). During the session, potential leaders were exposed to situations that would help make better risk decisions. It was further explained that any risk needs to be analysed and mitigation needs to be undertaken post identification of resources. It was adhered that injuries at worplace can be eliminated if the quantum of risk can be gauged,and same can be achieved using SNAP tool ( Scan, Notice, Analysis , Prioritize). The MBRD session also incorporated techniques on “Safety interactions” with on-job workers using BBS (Behaviour Based Safety) methodology so any unsafe behavior may be treated in a most apt way. The session was facilitated to key  site leaders, led by Mr Krishnamurthy, Field General Manager, which was followed by field demonstration.


Health Awareness


RGT, Barmer

Raageshwari Gas Terminal (RGT) organised an awareness session for employees and contract workforce on “Swine Flu”, with an aim to strengthen awareness and prevention of the flu. The session was organised on January 22, 2019 by Dr Rahul Gandhi S and team of paramedics. Employees were given brief introduction of the disease, its associated risk , vaccinations and various treatment options. The session also delved on general myths viz-a-viz medical facts related to the flu and its prevention methods.


An awareness session on cancer and precautions while handling chemicals was conducted at RGT for employees and contract workforce on January 22 & 23, 2019. The session included information on stigma related to cancer, use of tobacco/alchol leading to cancer and also procudures on chemical handling and its side effects relevant to worksite exposures.


Road Safety Campaign


RGT, Barmer

In view of increased vehicle movement due to operations including  drilling, projects, operations and petroleum engineering , a Road Safety Campaign was organized near Rajasthan Gas Terminal (RGT). The objective was to cascade the message that practicing road safety is the first responsibility towards our country and then the company. An awareness messaging on potential hazards was spread across four and multi wheel vehicle and others like pedestrian, two wheelers, animals and vice versa. Knowledge sharing session was undertaken to reduce the risk of road accident & road side injury. A handbook on road traffic signage was distributed to the drivers and helpers, which included the importance of vehicle inspection & maintenance as well.  Short videos were included which highlighted the importance of safe driving. “Everyone should respect others while driving or walking on the road” message was spread throughout the campaign.

In a step towards strengthening the quest for learning, Veda Library, IT & Innovation team organized a movie matinee show on “Greater Good: being Anil Agrawal” on January 31, 2019. The show was an inspirational story of a simple man, Mr Anil Agarwal - Founder and Chairman of Vedanta Group, who from the small lanes of Goriatoli (Patna) went to London then to New York to set-up India's first mineral resource and hydro-carbon company Vedanta. The journey had a message that if one wants to compete successfully then he/she must take risks what little one possess and have to play to win against to all odds. In the narrative Mr Anil Agrawal mentions that business is not about accumulating wealth, but it’s about giving back to the society. The session was well attended by employees.

Under the Barmer Unnati Project initiated in 2015, Cairn Oil & Gas has established 1126 Wadi’s i.e dry land horticulture orchards, in various remote villages of Barmer with ~70% survival rate. Once again this year, to celebrate the success of the programme with a yield of 135 tons of fruit, a Ber Plucking event was organised in Barmer on January 27,2019  for Cairn employees, their families, the farmers and children from nearby villages. Mr. Mandeep Narang, Field General Manager, Cairn Oil & Gas and his team also took part in this event and interacted with the children and farmers.


The farmers were extremely appreciative of Cairn’s initiative and requested for more trainings and establish more Wadi’s in this desert region. In order to celebrate and share the success, an exhibition-cum-sale of Ber’s and Pomegranates were organised in Gurgaon office on January 29, 2019. The entire stock was sold out within one hour of setting up the stall; which prompted  the team to organise a second exhibition-cum-sale on February 19,2019 ,wherein a larger quantities were mobilized and to farmer’s delight all the stock were sold out within two hours of the sale. Farmers were extremely grateful for the support and assistance in revenue generation.

Health Awareness

Under the health initiative, Cairn Oil & Gas organised a joint training-cum awareness program titled “sensitization of frontline health workers on H1N1 Influenza Virus caused Swine Flu” on January 20, 2019 with Government Medical College Barmer and District Hospital, Barmer.  ~200 frontline health workers including cleaning staff deployed under Green Barmer – Clean Barmer Project attended this session. Dr Gordhan Singh, in-charge of Swine Flu Department was the guest faculty.The main objective was to sensitize the frontline health workers who can aid promoting preventive and awareness measures, which would result in controlling the disease from spreading amongst the masses.


The District Health Department also used this platform to initiate two other critical health awareness drives “Tobacco Free Society” and “Anemia Free Rajasthan”. Dr N D Soni, Principal and Controller, Government Medical College Barmer; Dr Sanjeev Mittal, Principal Medical Officer; Mr Bhavani Shankar, Vice Principal Nursing Training Centre were some of the key stakeholders who graced the program.This initiative received much praise and appreciation from other key stakeholders and volunteers alike.


Cairn Oil & Gas partnered with FICCI to organize Rajasthan Skill Summit titled “Future Skills” in Jaipur on January 23, 3019 with an objective to promote Cairn’s Skills initiatives in a forum comprising of academia, corporates, Government and NGO’s to support in creating an eco-system that empowers youth for a better tomorrow with a premise of building people, building Rajasthan. Around 200 participants attended from 130 organizations. Rajasthan is the 1st State in India to establish a mission for livelihood in September’04 and subsequently formed Rajasthan Skill & Livelihood Development Corporation (RSLDC) and established Skill Universities towards collective efforts to transform the skilling landscape of Rajasthan.


The event was presided over by Hon’ble Minister Shri Ashok Chandna and honored by Mr Ngikya Gohan, MD, Rajasthan Skill & Livelihood Development Corporation, Mr L N Panwar, VC of Rajasthan, ILD Skill University and many other dignitaries from the field of skill development in Rajasthan. Mr P V Sudharshan, MD, Nettur Technical Training Foundation, our skill training partner for Cairn Centre of Excellence (CCOE), Jodhpur also deliberated on Cairn’s skill initiatives in Barmer and Jodhpur and future skills set requirements and jobs.

Another moment of pride came by way of an encouraging outcome of a mega health awareness initiative promoting mother and child health conducted on the occasion of “World Breast Feeding Week” during August 1-7, 2018. A week long campaign on the theme of “Breast Feeding – Foundation for Life” received national level recognition. This initiative was a joint initiative with Indian Academy for Pediatricians (IAP), Barmer; Lions Club Barmer; District Health Department Barmer and our implementing partner M/s Dhara Sansthan. Cairn Oil & Gas was awarded the 2nd prize for our “World’s Breast Feeding Week” initiatives.  This award was conferred by the national branch of Indian Academy for Pediatricians (IAP).


Vedanta Limited in association with Rawad village panchayat & Helpage India successfully organised a Mega Community Health Check-up Camp on February 24,  2019 at Government Primary School from Rawad Village near AGI (Above Ground Installation) 15 on our Midstream section. In total 245 people availed the services and were benefitted from the camp. The mega health camp was inaugurated by village Sarpanch & School Principal along with other officials from Government Primary School & PRIs. The village representatives interacted with the doctors, staff and appreciated the development efforts of the company in the area.

Cairn Oil & Gas received the prestigious FICCI CSR Award under category 4 for Health, Water and Sanitation for the private sector companies. Mr Chandra Pratap Singh and Dr Uma from CSR team attended the glittering event in New Delhi on February 21, 2019. They received the award on behalf of the company from the Hon’ble Minister of Commerce, Mr Suresh Prabhu. The process commenced in April 2018 with a detailed assessment on various parameters including issues/problems, geography, program implementation cycle/structure, monitoring & evaluation mechanism and financial & non-financial contribution. This was followed with an on-site assessment in January 2019 wherein the assessors expressed their appreciation of our projects as well as during their personal interaction with our program manager during the jury round held in early February 2019.


Employee at site locations participate actively in CSR volunteering activitites and thereby contributing to the community. Mr Manish Choudhury, Senior Electrical Engineer - Bhagyam gave a lecture session  on Political Science to the students of Government Senior Secondary School, Bhadkha . More than 45  students participated in this session which was held on February 16, 2019. Similarly, Ms Jagruti Vora, Assistant Manager, Administration Bhagyam visited Nand Ghar at Suthron Ki Dhani, Bhadkha and interacted with the kids. She spent time playing games and teaching kids through story-telling.

Best CSR Innovative Award

Vedanta Lanjigarh received the Best CSR Innovative Project Award during the CSR Summit & Awards 2019. The award was organised by UBS Forums on February 13, 2019 at Bengaluru. The award was given for Vedanta’s initiative in reviving and popularizing Dhokra Art & Saura Art amongst local populace. Through these projects we are providing capacity building, training and market linkage to 61 artisans of which 48 are women. Within a year of this project roll out, these novice artisans have earned more than INR 50,000 and now motivated to follow their passion and make a living out of it.

Hindustan Zinc received the ET Now CSR Leadership Awards in different categories organised by World CSR Day on February 18, 2019 at Mumbai. The awards were received under three categories : a) Hindustan Zinc Limited – Hall of Fame for various community development initiatives and best practices b)Vedanta Limited – Sports Development c) Rajpura Dariba Complex – Best Social Responsibility practices. They also recognized the Vedanta Group CSR Head Ms. Neelima Khetan as one of the 100 Most Impactful CSR Leaders globally. World CSR Day is an independent and not-for-profit organisation guided by advisory council.

Best Employer Brand Award

Vedanta Ltd., Jharsuguda was conferred with the coveted ‘National Best Employer Brands 2018’ for its path breaking HR practices and exemplary use of marketing communication for Human Resource Development. Maintaining its excellent streak, this is the seventh award which has been bagged by the HR team in FY 2018-19. On behalf of the company the award was received by Mr M Sakthivel, Head HR, Vedanta Ltd. Jharsuguda during a ceremony held in Mumbai.

Strengthening Energy Conservation

Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) conducted  an energy conservation campaign in schools of District Mansa in collaboration with Education Department, Mansa to strengthen awareness about energy conservation among maximum energy consumers. 42 schools of Mansa District are registered under this awareness campaign. An annual event of this project was observed by TSPL at Govt. Senior Secondary School, Raipur (Mansa) on February 18,2019. Event started with launch of Club Urja Magazine-2, in which all the articles which were written by students and teachers of member schools were published. During the event, top 3 best performing schools were rewarded with prize money.Twenty best Club Urja coordinator teachers were also rewarded with certificates & souvenirs. Mr. Subhash Chandra, District Education Officer-Mansa was the Chief Guest with Special Guest Mr. Jagroop Bharti- Deputy DEO, Mansa. Mr. Kulwinder, Sarpanch of village Raipur was also present during the event. He appreciated TSPL’s initiative towards building awareness amongst the community.

Smelter Commissioning

The Nchanga Smelter commissioned three (3) online stack analysers which will monitor the plant’s emission of Sulphur dioxide, Carbon monoxide and dust. The analysers will monitor emissions from the Cobalt Recovery Furnace (CRF), Slug Cleaning Furnace (SCF) and the Anode Furnace (AF). Mr Enock Mponda, Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Director—Smelting & Refining said the commissioning of the online monitors was a step in the right direction and showed that the smelter was on course to complete the ZEMA mandate of installing the online analysers, a bag house and scrubber by the end of 2019.

Sesa Young Buds League

SESA Football Academy launched the Vedanta Sesa Young Buds League with the support of All India Football Federation (AIFF) at Sirsaim Goa, with an objective to give a boost to junior football in the state. The league, which is under the AIFF Baby Leagues project, was kicked-off in the presence of Mr Dominic Pereira - GFA Executive member, North Goa, and Mr Brahmanand Sankhwalkar, Former Indian Football Team captain and Arjuna awardee.  The league has invited participation from teams across all parts of Goa state wherein six teams in Under-10 and eight teams in the under-12 category will battle for the title.
